Wu Deng-yi x Fang Wenshan’s cross-border dialogue
Fang Wenshan can be regarded as the most talented lyricist in the Chinese pop music scene. He collaborated with Jay Chou to compose many popular songs such as “Fresh Like Snow” and “Blue and White Porcelain”. Fang Wenshan’s works are graceful and elegant, citing scriptures and classics, and the artistic conception is as delicate as a movie screen, which is unique. In terms of subject matter, it is also more varied than traditional pop songs, such as martial arts, war and even traditional Chinese medicine, which can become his lyrics material.
And if you want to talk about the art world, who can best represent the global contemporary color ink art, then Wu Deng-yi is definitely the only representative. Mr. Wu Deng-yi uses different pigment media and techniques to break through the previous method of color ink painting that can only express dynamics through ink and wash lines, making color ink more powerful and free to surround the picture, striking the tradition of contemporary color ink and the West. Aesthetic innovation.
Just like Fang Wenshan’s words plus the arrangement and elements of popular music, it forms a perfect combination of tradition and innovation in music. This time at ART TAIPEI, two master figures in their respective fields have exhibited, and because both of them have their own style of tradition and innovation in Chinese culture, they have unexpectedly become the focus of expectations.
Fang Wenshan’s work exhibited at ART TAIPEI is the punk cat Sting co-branded by Fang Wenshan and Jay Chou. The special feature of this doll is a lyric in the song “Sky Blue Waiting for Misty Rain…” However, the sky blue here actually comes from Ru kiln, not blue and white porcelain! Fang Wenshan will originate from the Ru kiln skills of nearly a thousand years in the Northern Song Dynasty, combined with the steampunk technology style that was very popular in the 1980s, and combine the cultural heritage with the texture of mechanical civilization to make a perfect combination of punk cat Sting.
Wu Deng-yi is exhibiting a huge scroll《Imperial Landscapes》 which is more than 20 meters long. It took three years to complete the creation. It combines the concept of Western abstract painting and the superposition of multi-layered colors to create the strength of color ink and the likeness of oil painting. and boldly surpass the traditional use of colors, allowing purple, green, and blue to extend and surround in the work, making the whole《Imperial Landscapes》look extremely noble.
In 2021, Mr. Wu Deng-yi’s International Tour of Color and Ink Art will be exhibited in more than 60 cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Tokyo in December. Coincidentally, Fang Wenshan will also be exhibited in Beijing and Shanghai in November.
Fang Wenshan defined the depth of the lyrics, and Wu Deng-yi established the height of contemporary color ink giants. When asked if it was possible for the two masters to work together, both said in unison that they were “planning and discussing.” It is believed that in the near future, the two will have more cooperation and innovation in art, which will truly belong to contemporary oriental aesthetic art and present it to all art-loving collectors in an innovative way.
